What are Lip Fillers?

Lip filler is an aesthetic procedure applied to add volume to the lips or to eliminate asymmetries in the lips. Lip fillers are applied to make the lips fuller and more attractive; to reduce fine wrinkles and to achieve a youthful appearance.

In the past, permanent fillers such as silicone were also used. However, due to developing complications, permanent fillers are no longer preferred today.

Can Lip Fillers Be Done in Beauty Centers?

Lip filler is a medical procedure; it can only be done by doctors and only in health facilities.

Lip filling in beauty salons or hairdressers can cause serious health problems. Medical procedures cannot be performed in such places that are not health facilities, even if there is a doctor who performs it. Medical procedures can only be done in health institutions.

Can every doctor perform aesthetic procedures such as lip fillers?

Only Ear Nose Throat, Plastic Surgery and Dermatology specialists and medical aesthetic physicians certified by the Ministry of Health can perform medical aesthetic procedures such as dermal fillers and botox on the face. What are the points to consider before the filler?

Fillers can cause bleeding at the injection site while taking blood thinners (such as acetylsalicylic acid, heparin, NSAIDs, etc.). These drugs should be stopped 1 week to 10 days before the filler application under the supervision of a doctor.

How is Lip Fillers Done?

Before the procedure, the patient’s lip and facial structure are evaluated. The type of lip filler to be applied is decided together with the patient.

The lip is thoroughly numbed with local anesthetic pomade. Then, the lip filler is injected into the lips with fine-tipped needles. The application time is usually 15-25 minutes. The injected filler; increases the lip volume, fills the fine lines and makes the lips look fuller, shaped and younger.

Lip filler can also be done with a cannula; however, we prefer to do it with a needle.

Recommendations for After Lip Fillers

The area where the fillers were applied should not be played with or massaged for the first 3 days.

Excessively hot foods and drinks should not be avoided for the first 3 days.

Smoking should not be done for the first 3 days as it causes the lips to shrink and pipette should not be used while drinking.

Kissing should not be done for the first 3 days.

Plenty of water should be consumed after the filler.

Is Lip Filling a Painful Procedure? Does It Require Anesthesia?

Lip filling is performed by applying a topical anesthesia called numbing ointment to the lips. It is not a very painful procedure. Lip filling application under topical anesthesia is well tolerated by patients.

Will There Be Swelling or Bruising After Lip Filling?

There is some swelling immediately after the procedure. Applying ice and Arnica cream after the procedure reduces the swelling. However, the lip may still swell a little. The swelling is almost completely relieved after the 3rd day.

A slight bruising may be seen, although very rare.

When Does the Effect of Lip Filling Appear?

It gives fast results. The effect is seen as soon as the filling is applied. There is no need to wait to observe the effect as in botulinum toxin application.

There is some edema in the lips immediately after the application. The intended result is obtained after 3 days when this edema has subsided.

How Many Sessions Are Required for Lip Filling?

A single session is usually sufficient; however, sometimes additional sessions may be required.

Lip filling is a temporary application. The effectiveness of hyaluronic acid fillers used as fillers decreases over time due to their breakdown and absorption in the body. Therefore, the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid fillers lasts for 6-12 months. This period may vary depending on the product used and individual factors.
