What Should Be Considered Before and After Rhinoplasty? How to Choose the Best Doctor?

Am I a suitable patient for rhinoplasty?

If you have nasal congestion and/or you are dissatisfied with the external view of your nose,

If your post-operative expectations are realistic,

If you don’t smoke,

If you are over the age of 18,

If you do not have a serious health problem that will prevent surgery, then you are a suitable patient for the rhinoplasty operation.

Should I have rhinoplasty surgery done by an Ear Nose Throat specialist or a Plastic Surgeon?

You can get both specializations done.

How do I know if my doctor is the right doctor?

If he/she frequently performs rhinoplasty surgery,

If their former patients are satisfied with his/her surgery results,

If he/she analyzes the problems in your nose correctly,

If he/she spends enough time with you, you are at the right doctor.

Is one doctor enough or do I have to go form one doctor to another doctor?

If the first doctor you went gave you enough confidence, you may not need the opinion of a second doctor. However, if you are not completely convinced, you can get a second or third opinion from a doctor and make a decision by comparing. This is all about your persuasion.

Is a special preparation necessary before rhinoplasty surgery?

Since your rhinoplasty surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, you must fast for at least 8 hours before the operation. Therefore, do not eat or drink anything after 24.00 the night before the surgery.

We want to be discontinued the blood thinning drugs such as aspirin, coumadin, gingko biloba 1 week before the operation. If you are using such drugs, consult your doctor and stop taking your medications.

Do I need to shave my mustache before rhinoplasty surgery?

We ask male patients to shave their mustache, if any, before rhinoplasty. Because nasal discharges and nasal bleeding in the form of leakage after the surgery can accumulate in the mustache, harden and crust over. These hardened crusts are quite difficult to clean. For this reason, we want male patients to shave their mustaches before surgery, if possible.

I smoke, can I have rhinoplasty surgery?

Postoperative wound healing problems can be seen in smokers. If possible, you should quit smoking in the pre-operative period. Smoking cessation is an undisputed requirement for the best post-operative outcomes. Do not smoke for at least 1 week before surgery.

How many days do I have to stay at the hospital after rhinoplasty surgery?

We are hospitalized the rhinoplasty patients for 1 day after the operation. We discharge you the next day.

Will I have a lot of pain after rhinoplasty?

You probably won’t have as much pain as you think. Although many rhinoplasty patients come to the surgery with the worry that I will have a lot of pain, their post-surgery feedbacks are like that “I did not have as much pain as I expected.”. Your pain will continue to decrease until the tampons are removed. After the tampons are removed, your pain will disappear to a great extent. You can use the painkillers we have prescribed until this period.

I’m most afraid of the nose tampon, will it be painful to remove the tampon?

We use soft silicone tampons in rhinoplasty surgeries. This tampon is flexible and does not stick to the nose; this makes its removal easy and painless. Before removing the tampon, we also anesthetize the inside of the nose. You will not have serious pain during the tampon removal.

Can I have my dressings done elsewhere?

Ideally, we do all your post-operative dressings (such as removing or changing the nose cast, removing sutures, etc.). We prefer it this way.

How long will I not be able to go to work/school if I have rhinoplasty?

We recommend not going to work/school for a minimum of 1 week. We want to last the cast we will put on the back of the nose for at least two weeks. At the end of the 2nd week, your bruising and swelling will be relieved to a great extent, so you can return to work at the end of this period. This period can be extended if you work in a job that requires heavy lifting or if you need to travel frequently.

What should I pay attention to after septorhinoplasty surgery?

Avoid heavy physical exercise for the first 3-4 weeks. You should stay away from sports for 3 months. Do not wear glasses for the first 3 months. If your glasses are not very heavy, you can start using them after 3-4 weeks. Avoid direct sunlight for the first 3 months, and always use sunscreen when going out to a sunny environment.

When can I start my exercises again after rhinoplasty?

After the 3rd week, you can start light-intensity exercises.You can increase your exercises according to your feeling of well-being day by day.

When can I board the plane?

After the 10th day, you can board the plane.
